7 is an operating system produced by for use on personal computers, including home and business desktops, laptops, netbooks, tablet PCs, and media center PCs; 7 was relsed to manufacturing on July 22, 2009, and rched eral retail availability worldwide on October 22, 2009, less than three yrs after the relse of its predecessor, Vista. 7's server counterpart, Server 2008 R2, was relsed at the same time. 7 is succeeded by 8, which was relsed on October 26, 2012.

Unlike Vista, which introduced a large of new ftures, 7 was intended to be a more focused, incremental upgrade to the line, with the goal of being compatible with appliions and hardware with which Vista was alrdy compatible.

Presentations given by in 2008 focused on multi-touch support, an updated shell with a new taskbar, referred to internally as the Superbar, a home networking system called HomeGroup, and performance improvements. Some standard appliions that have been included with prior relses of , including Calendar, Mail, Maker, and Photo Gallery, are not included in 7 a most are instd offered separately at no charge as part of the Essentials suite.
